Maryland Flames Light Up Local High Schools
The Maryland Flames
players led several local high school girls’ basketball teams for
the 2006-2007 season. Both Claire Wheeler (SR Good Counsel) and
Molly Wannen (SR James Hubert Blake) led their school teams this
year with outstanding play and leadership. Both Wheeler and Wannen
played for Coach Vinny Allen on the Maryland Flames ‘89 National
Team. The seasoned team participated in the Sr. Nationals in Disney
in the summer of 2006—their last nationals in which they could
participate. Both played for Coach Allen for over six years.
Wheeler played on the
Varsity Basketball team for all four years at Good Counsel High
School. Her team captured the WCAC Title in the 2005-2006 season,
and finished second in their league and third in the WCAC playoffs.
Wheeler is headed to Harvard where she will play on the Ivy League
Women’s basketball team. Wannen, who also played Varsity ball for 4
years, led the Blake team throughout the season. The Blake Bengals
placed first in their division and their region, and went to the
State championship game where they lost to Roosevelt, the defending
2006 champions. Wannen, who also excelled in field hockey and
lacrosse at Blake, will play lacrosse at William and Mary.
Ellen Marshall (SR
Covenant Life) also played for Coach Allen with fellow teammates
Wheeler and Wannen. She was also a leader on her team after
recovering from an ACL injury in 2005. Both Marshall and her
younger sister, Kara (8th grade and a ’92 Maryland Flames
player) dominated the PVAC League and were lead scorers on their
team. Both sisters made the PVAC All League Team.
The ’92 Maryland Flames
National Team, who finished third in the country at the 2006
Nationals, made an impact on girls’ high school basketball this past
season. The majority of the players on the team made their varsity
high school team as freshmen, and Marshall as an 8th
grader at Covenant Life.
Bridget Coakley, Kristen
Haley, Nicole Krusen and Nina Swanson who all attend Georgetown
Visitation, helped their team win their division as well as capture
the ISL AA Championship. Haley, who led the team in rebounds and
blocks, and Krusen, who led the team in scoring and 3-pointers, both
made the All League Team for the ISL AA Division. Krusen was named
in the Washington Post as the lead 3-point scorer for the Washington
Metropolitan area.
Two more ’92 Flames
players, Darian Bridgers and Sally Marx, started and starred for
Georgetown Day, where they were lead scorers and 3-point shooters.
Georgetown Day came in second in their division and Bridgers and
Marx led their team to the ISL A Championship game where they came
up short of a win to National Cathedral. Both Bridgers and Marx had
a great season and made the All League Team for the ISL A League.
Other players from the
’92 Flames include, Christine Weithman who started as a freshman for
the Blake Bengals. She, along with teammates and Flames players
Molly Wannen and Sammie Allen, had an incredible season going all
the way to States. Katie Sheahin (SO Good Counsel) started as a #2
guard for the Falcons and has played varsity ball for two years with
fellow Flames, Claire Wheeler. Melissa Gallo (FR W.T. Woodson) and
Aja Wallpher (FR Mt. Hebron) played for their varsity squads.
Kelsey Murphy started on the JV team at Good Counsel and Brenna
Haven started on the JV squad at Wootton; both have a bright future
with their respective teams.
